Ukrainian Artist Vasyl Netsko: A Chronicle of Resilience and Hope Through Art
I recently had the opportunity to give an interview Dziennik Bałtycki where we delved into a range of topics close to my heart. During our discussion, we explored the profound belief I hold that brighter days are ahead for my homeland, Ukraine, a sentiment deeply embedded in my journey to Poland in 2015 amidst the ongoing war. This belief was symbolized by a message I wrote upon my arrival: “It’s always darkest before the dawn.”

Our conversation further covered my artistic endeavors to promote and showcase Ukraine’s rich culture, history, and resilience through my art. I shared my commitment to participating in charity auctions, viewing art as a powerful weapon in the fight for freedom and independence. This battle, as I believe, is fought on various fronts, with art capable of moving and uniting thousands.
We discussed one of my poignant works, the anti-war mural “In the Crosshairs,” created to remind the world of the innocence lost in conflicts, symbolized by three girls playing, unaware of being targeted by a sniper. This artwork serves as a stark reminder of the war’s impact on our future and hope – our children.

Additionally, we talked about my “Madonna of Peace” painting, crafted in response to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Currently part of a charity campaign in the United States, this piece embodies a plea for peace and support for Ukraine, featuring symbolic elements of Ukrainian culture and the unwavering spirit of its people.

The interview also touched on my journey from a champion bodybuilder to a respected artist, highlighting how my experiences and Ukrainian heritage inspire my art. We discussed how my exhibitions, such as “Colorful Dreams of Gdańsk,” serve not only as a testament to my new home in Poland but also as a cultural bridge showcasing the beauty and spirit of Ukraine to the world.
Through this interview, I aimed to convey the universal message of hope, unity, and the transformative power of art to heal and inspire across borders.
